The oblique snail polypore (lat. Inonotus obliquus) is a parasitic wood dweller and forms a black chaga tuber on birch and alder trees. It is found in Russia, Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe, Northern Europe, Japan, Korea and Central Asia (Kazakhstan). The tubers are drunk as a hot water extract in the traditional medicine of these countries because of their effect. In these regions, the mushroom is traditionally used for tumors, for prevention and accompanying support, especially for lung cancer, stomach and colon cancer and skin cancer. According to Wikipedia, laboratory and animal tests have confirmed the anti-cancer effect, but clinical studies are still pending. Wikipedia further reports that extracts from the Chaga tubers stimulate the immune system, have an anti-inflammatory effect (particularly good for the stomach and intestinal area) and protect the liver and pancreas. The mushroom is said to have a positive effect on cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and the cardiovascular system.
This broad spectrum of effects is attributed to the polysaccharides, which are among the most important active components of the mushroom. The polysaccharides also stimulate the immune system so that it can fight tumors, viruses and bacteria more effectively. It has been observed that the mushroom also has a positive effect on eczema and psoriasis, as well as on wound healing.
Chaga extracts are also used to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy and as a general strengthening agent for skin diseases and psoriasis (anti-inflammatory effect).
